Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Article written by: Prof. Katharine Horak, Doctor of Natural Science

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common bowel disorders of the small and large intestine. It is not caused by organ malfunctioning. It is actually a long-term disorder of the evacuation of the colon. Typically it occurs in adolescence and early adulthood. According to statistical data almost 10% of the European population is afflicted with it and in the US the number is 15%. Twice as many women suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) than men. It is frequently triggered by stress, tension, food allergies, infections, eating habits, hormonal changes or the overuse of antibiotics and medication.

Symptoms differ depending on whether the irritable bowel syndrome is accompanied by diarrhoea or not. In cases without diarrhoea the person may, conversely, suffer from constipation. The following symptoms may be present and are common with both forms: feelings of indigestion, bloated stomach (bloated belly), rumbling and growling of the stomach, stomach pain, gasses, painful bowel movement, nausea, back pain, tiredness and lethargy.

What is IBS

It is an abbreviation for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Do you frequently have an urge to use the toilet, but the feeling of having fully emptied your bowels is rare or missing altogether? Do you often have milk and dairy products intolerance? Do you find after eating dairy products symptoms like bloating and bowel rumbling worsen and diarrhoea, which occurs more frequently, worsens as well? Does this condition, and mainly diarrhoea, get worse in stressful situations? Does it “drive” you into the bathroom when, for example, you realize that you’ve overslept and you’ll be late for school or work? Or, does it come unexpectedly when finding out in the morning that your child is unwell? Do you have to visit the toilet several times before leaving for work, because of your crying child or some other stress in the family? Is this something that occurs every day? If your answer to the situations described is “yes” then you are a candidate for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This applies also to people who suffer from constipation. If the main symptom of the irritable colon syndrome is constipation, it is usually persistent and it is difficult to evacuate even just once or twice per week. Painful bloating and rumbling in the bowels increase and the longer the period of time before the next bowel movement has been passed, the more unpleasant the symptoms become.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder disrupting the normal functioning of the colon. It is characterised by stomach pain, bloating and an altered functioning of the bowels.

  • “Irritable bowel” – the first part of the name, indicates the malfunctioning of the regulation of the bowel which leads to anomalous sensitivity and muscle activity.

  • “syndrome” – the second part of the name of the intestinal disorder, indicates a set of symptoms typical for this intestinal disorder.

Sufferers of irritable bowel syndrome accompanied by constipation

... should regularly use Colonix fiber which:

  • has an ideal composition. It contains high quality soluble and insoluble fibre which is a prerequisite for maintaining a healthy colon

  • gently supports the natural process of evacuation – brings relief from constipation and haemorrhoids

  • is one of the most effective and safest natural solutions for constipation, ever.

Cause of the problems

The most common cause is that the bowel peristalsis (i.e. the automatic contractions of the intestinal muscles which push the food further along the digestive tract) is malfunctioning. A healthy person experiences gentle and regular contractions, so that he/she is not aware of them until the urge to evacuate is felt. An irritable bowel works irregularly, alternating between stomach cramps and weak contractions resulting in stomach pain, constipation, diarrhoea and other difficulties. Sometimes there is back pain, fatigue or a bloated stomach (bloated belly) but you may equally experience symptoms not connected with digestion which, according to some experts, can be attributed to allergies and inner tension as well. Irritable bowel syndrome is frequently the consequence of acute inflammatory bowel or other diseases, especially those which have been treated with antibiotics on a long-term basis.

The colon is an organ which is very sensitive to stress. Gastroenterologists have noticed that irritable bowel syndrome often strikes people who lead busy lives and who need to cope with many new, stressful stimuli every day. Why do some people suffer from the syndrome while others have no problems with even the most stressful of situations and heaviest of work-loads? It is all a matter of the individual and his/her own make up and sensibilities. Today’s lifestyle is very demanding and as a consequence the number of ill people rises.

A too active or lazy bowel

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome presents itself as difficulties in evacuation. You are stalked by diarrhoea lasting for over a week and during stressful periods it increasingly worsens. The diarrhoea stage usually is followed by a few days of constipation. That’s when the bowel is lazy and does not want to evacuate, although you feel the pressure which necessitates going to the bathroom. Intestinal disorders are typically accompanied by feelings of fullness, painful stomach cramps and a bloated stomach (bloated belly). These disorders seem serious, but theoretically the sufferer is not considered to be ill. It is a functional disorder. The complications do not have an underlying organic cause, it is not an inflammation of the intestine or damage to its structure as it is in the case of diverticulosis, cancer, etc. Due to unknown reasons bowel movement is disrupted, sometimes it is too fast, at other times too slow. If you are experiencing alternating diarrhoea and constipation and painful stomach cramps the only way to treat this condition is with rest, peace and quiet.

It is very difficult to give a precise diagnosis

Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the troublesome disorders of the digestive tract which is very hard to diagnose. Symptoms of IBS are partially mingled with symptoms of other digestive difficulties. Some patients for example incorrectly attribute the symptoms to chronic pancreatitis. Apart from a basic gastroenterological examination other auxiliary examinations like sonography and colonoscopy are needed. Why is it necessary to undergo these examinations? To eliminate more serious organic diseases of the digestive tract like inflammatory colon diseases, digestion and absorption disorders, celiac disease, diseases of the pancreas etc. Diarrhoea and constipation are symptoms which also accompany such grave diseases as cancer or inflammation of the colon. But the difference with these diseases is that there is no blood in the stool and it is never part of the clinical record of the irritable bowel!

The physician needs to exclude all other possibilities first and only after all other results are negative and absolutely nothing points to another health problem, can he/she, in clear conscience, state the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome.

If you have the necessary discipline and take good care of yourself there is a relatively high hope of a cure. Even in cases when due to a wrong diagnosis or neglected treatment the symptoms endure for years, the situation is not hopeless.

Fears of irritable bowel syndrome leading to cancer are mostly unfounded. The constipation associated with this disorder would have to become chronic and last several years in order for it to be linked with an increased risk of colon cancer.

What are the solutions?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Lifestyle changes, elimination of stress and improving ways of controlling stress are the main means of preventing irritable bowel syndrome. Regular exercise alleviates stress and improves bowel function. People frequently under stress should slow down and not get distracted by reading, listening to the radio or smoking during evacuation. It is advisable to sleep at least seven hours, eat smaller portions more often, limit the intake of fats, and increase the intake of proteins and fibre.

1.) A warm compress on the stomach or a hot bath may relieve stomach cramps.

2.) Do not smoke, drink alcohol or coffee; this encourages peristalsis and promotes diarrhoea.

3.) Try to find out which food causes problems and eliminate it from your menu. Do not eat spicy, fried and fatty foods, or sweets containing sorbitol and mannitol which cause bloating.

4.) With constipation it is very important to practice the evacuation reflex. Choose a time for your regular bowel movement – the best time being in the morning.

5.) If you have difficulties with evacuation a massage of the underbelly with a closed fist is of help, or you could also try a drink of lukewarm water with a bit of salt.

6.) High-fibre foods may moderate problems, but do not eat foods that cause bloating.

The dos and don’ts of eating

Are you worried about what every bite of the food you are eating will do to you? Should you be suffering from the irritable bowel syndrome your fear is justified. When treating irritable bowel syndrome it is required to amend eating habits depending on whether suffering from diarrhoea or constipation.
People suffering from diarrhoea should eliminate all foods known to cause frequent loose stools or bloating. They are, apart from dairy products, also e.g. legumes, yeast dough and carbonated drinks. Fibre should be limited.
Conversely, with constipation it is necessary to add more fibre to food. It is mostly found in whole-grain bakery products, cereals, vegetables and fruit (which should not be peeled).

  • Avoid: dairy products that are sweetened or have a high fat content, wheat, pastries and all foods containing too much sugar, coffee, alcohol, fried foods, ice cream, orange and grapefruit juice, nuts, instant products and red meat.

  • It is of benefit to add these foods to the menu: whole-grain rice, yogurts with live probiotic cultures, vegetables and fruit, fish and poultry. Garlic is also suitable; it supports digestion and decomposes toxins in the bowel.

The Colonix program for internal cleansing

Colonix program contains high quality soluble and insoluble fibre which plays a decisive role in maintaining a healthy colon. It is one of the most effective and safest natural solutions for constipation ever. Thanks to its components a thorough cleansing from the colon of the accumulated build-up of sediments and parasites is achieved and the symptoms are not only alleviated but in most cases disappear altogether. It is an ideal means of prevention, protecting us from various diseases. After bowel cleansing it is also of benefit to regularly use Colonix fibre, which has an ideal composition of ingredients. Apart from psyllium it contains a further 15 different types of soluble and insoluble fibre extracted from medicinal plants. By using it you will be able to prevent the formation of further intestinal sediments, diverticula and therefore also colon inflammation, more effectively.
More good reasons for using Colonix:

  • it gently supports the natural process of evacuation

  • it brings relief from constipation and haemorrhoids

  • it provides an increased feeling of satiation which prevents the intake of more food supplying energy and so contributes to a reduction of body weight

  • it protects the mucous membrane of the intestines from the unwanted irritation of toxic and carcinogenic substances

  • it reduces the risk of colon and rectal cancer

  • reduces the formation of intestinal outpouchings and colon inflammation - diverticulitis

My tummy is completely flat right now

I genuinely love your products! I suffer with IBS and have had it since I was a young child. I am now 40 and until recently believed I would have to live with all of the bloating, unpleasant bowel movements, swollen tummy, etc. I had been taking a prescription medication for IBS so when that was recalled I just about threw in the towel. And then whilst browsing the internet I discovered your product.
I was a lttle bit suspicious about the statements that Colonix and KleriTea would not trigger cramping or even severe bloating. I was happily surprised that this is a really soft program and very effective. From the very first day I have had one complete and at times two complete bowel movements per day. The movements are usually easy, simply no pushing or even forcing, and the quantity is full as well as soft. My tummy seemingly flat right nowThe key is always to consume plenty of drinking water! There have been a few days I failed to drink as much as I should have and missed a BM after which I caught back up on the drinking water and had an incredibly big BM that evening. I really could continue, and I actually do with my close friends and family. I really love this product and you've got a customer for a lifetime!
