Symptoms of bowel problems – diarrhoea, constipation

Most people are, unfortunately, intimately familiar with diarrhoea or constipation. These upsetting symptoms can appear unexpectedly at any time, affecting our lives. We don’t understand what is going on, being unaware that we have done anything wrong. A worse scenario is when we ignore the situation irregardless of the cause . We trivialize our bowel problems considering them a normal, although unpleasant, part of life. Initially diarrhoea or constipation aren’t really proper bowel diseases, but rather signals, warning that something is not right with our digestive system. It is trying to tell us that it needs help. A wise person does not wait for the situation to solve itself; a well functioning, healthy digestive system is vitally important for a generally good state of health.

Many people are not aware of the fact that a healthy stomach and bowels are closely connected. If food is not fully decomposed the digestive process in the small intestine is more difficult and incomplete. As a result we do not absorb a sufficient amount of the vitally important nutrients. Moreover, due to a slower peristaltic movement the undigested food travels through the colon at a much slower pace and becomes a constant unwanted irritant. On the other hand, a common reason behind a very loose bowel movement is increased metabolism; the peristaltic movement is too fast and many nutrients leave the body before they are absorbed by the bowels.

Diarrhoea can be fatal if it cannot be stopped. The usual outcome after 15 days of continuous diarrhoea is death. Constipation is not such a significant threat to life as diarrhoea. If, however, it becomes chronic, it can lead to bowel cancer, rectal cancer or many other diseases like diverticulosis, bowel inflammation, ulcerative colitis, allergies, etc.

Why use the Colonix Program when suffering from constipation?

If you are troubled by constipation using the Colonix program is extremely helpful. It is one of the most effective, safest natural solutions to constipation ever. Colonix fibre has an ideal composition. It contains high quality soluble and insoluble fibre which ensures that the colon stays healthy:

  • it gently supports a natural bowel movement bringing relief from constipation and haemorrhoids

Constipation and why it happens

Symptoms of bowel problems – diarrhoea, constipation

It belongs amongst modern -day diseases. The proof that this is a real disease is found in the unpleasant experience of long-term constipation sufferers. Many people are worried if they do not have a bowel movement for two to three days. Occasionally it happens that some people only have a bowel movement once per week. But the opposite can also be true – there are people who have a bowel movement even twice per day. Let’s take a more detailed look at what is an ideal situation and what needs to be considered as a serious problem.

If you are frequently troubled by constipation you should take more care with your daily eating habits and lifestyle in general. There are many instances when the tendency towards constipation can be hereditary. In other cases disagreeable constipation may be the result of a change in environment, travelling, frequent neurosis, general digestive problems, a slow-down of the peristaltic movement, etc. In these instances though, the constipation is short-lived and the symptoms are easily taken care of and eliminated. There is no danger at this stage.

If, however, the constipation is chronic, we are dealing with a serious and insidious bowel disease. In many cases we can cause it ourselves, by e.g. not eating properly (for more details see here). We do not watch what we eat and whether it is healthy. Our diet mostly lacks enough fruit, vegetables or legumes. We are more enticed by products made of white flour than whole wheat foods, which we reject. Our menu is dominated by meat, we bypass legumes. This means that our food is lacking in fibre. Moreover, in most cases we do not drink enough liquids, especially if we drink many sweetened soft-drinks and rarely avail ourselves of pure, plain water. Obviously, this is not all. I am sure you’ll recall that often you are so busy that you don’t even have time for a regular bowel movement. What is the result? The peristaltic movement slows down. The colon becomes lazy and consequently the transit of faeces is slower. And therefore it follows that:

  • the colon absorbs more water than it normally should

  • the digested food – chymus - thickens and there are remains of undigested food, peeled off intestinal epithelium and bacteria

  • the result is a painful bowel movement

When the chymus slowly travels through the bowels, toxic and carcinogenic substances start to form. These are, clearly, dangerous for our health, because gradually the toxins penetrate the intestinal wall, get into blood and from there into all organs of the body.
Thus, the defensive mechanisms of our body are impaired and even if it takes decades, all of a sudden results appear in various forms – be it heart disease, kidney disease, disease of the pancreas or bowel cancer, etc. For more information see here.

Diarrhoea and why it happens

Symptoms of bowel problems – diarrhoea, constipation

Diarrhoea most commonly occurs in children although often in adults as well. We can unequivocally say that everybody has experienced diarrhoea. It may be caused by an infection or food poisoning. It can also be caused by stress, eating habits, or bowel disease, e.g. diverticulosis, irritable bowel disease, bowel inflammation, bowel cancer etc. Diarrhoea presents a danger when travelling to exotic destinations where we may ingest unknown or infected foods or water. It is in this way that new bacteria, hitherto unknown to our body, reach our bowels. During treatment with antibiotics the balance of the intestinal bacteria is upset which, more often than not, causes diarrhoea. These mentioned instances mainly lead to short-term illnesses. An exception here is diarrhoea in old people and children, where there is a danger of dehydration due to a major loss of liquids.

How does diarrhoea start?

So far we know four mechanisms leading to diarrhoea. They may occur separately or they merge with one another.
Diarrhoea occurs if:

  • the peristaltic movement is disrupted, whether it is caused by a slow-down (contributing to the growth of pathogenic bacteria) or acceleration ( resulting in insufficient time for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients and water).

  • there is an accumulation of water binding substances in the bowels. These cause the liquids to leak through the intestinal wall. As a result the stool in the colon can thicken since the water contained in it is absorbed by the water binding substances.

  • there is excessive excretion of salts and water through the cells of the intestinal mucous membrane or if the cells are unable to absorb water from the intestinal content.

  • the intestinal mucous membrane is inflammed which, with many diseases, presents itself as a secondary symptom.

Bacterial, viral or protozoan infections can set off any of the above mentioned mechanisms. Some medication e.g. laxatives, antibiotics, antacids (for heartburn) diuretics (anti-water pills) and some drugs for gout can also cause it. Other catalysts are: excessive amounts of alcohol, food allergies as well as diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism (an over-active thyroid gland) and some types of cancer.

Diarrhoea can also be useful

One of the body’s most effective defence mechanisms is heavy diarrhoea. This is how the body gets rid of harmful substances which cause the inflammation of the mucous lining of the stomach and bowels. In this case diarrhoea actually acts as a cleansing function. Therefore it is not recommended to take anti-diarrhoea pills straight away. It is better to try to endure the unpleasant, but usually short-lived, problems. Don’t forget to drink enough liquid which will prevent dehydration and supply the body with water and minerals which have been depleted.

When is it necessary to see a doctor?

Definitely in a situation when the diarrhoea has lasted for more than two days, and has also been accompanied by fever and strong stomach cramps. Other unsettling symptoms are displaying a rash or contracting hepatitis (yellow jaundice – the skin and the sclera become yellow), a permanent weakening of the body and puss, mucous or blood presenting in the stools.

What to do when symptoms occur?

  • Drink lots of liquids
By supplying the body with liquids containing salt and sugar we restore the loss of glucose and minerals, the most suitable being the so-called sports and rehydration beverages.

To prepare a rehydration drink: dissolve a teaspoonful of sea salt and 8 spoonfuls of honey or sugar in one litre of previously boiled water. Drink one litre of this drink every two hours, i.e. approximately 150 ml every 15 minutes. It is a simple solution which replenishes the stores of fluids better than water alone. After discovering its effects in 1974 this solution saved millions of lives and the medical journal The Lancet described it as “the greatest turning point in medicine of the 20th century”.

Herbal infusions also replenish body fluids. Some of them have a calming effect on the digestive tract. It is permissible to drink two cups of raspberry tea (do not drink it in the first months of pregnancy) daily or during the day have small sips of ginger tea (up to 3 cups in total). Adding sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) oil (5 drops per 2.5 dl) into a herb tea made from St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) or German chamomile (Matracaria recutita) and used internally, can also help.

Conversely, sodas or colas or other carbonated drinks are not suitable because they contain carbon dioxide.

  • Only clear liquids
The answer to the question about what to eat in cases of diarrhoea is easy. You should eat/drink clear liquids like chicken broth, jelly (aspic) etc. These broths replenish the liquids, salts and minerals that have been lost. Beef broth is not recommended for babies, smaller children or for people suffering from allergies to certain types of food.

  • Avoid certain foods
Foods high in complex saccharides which are difficult to digest should not be eaten. They are e.g. whole wheat bread, pasta, and other whole wheat products from wheat flour. Additionally oat flakes, apples, peaches, plums and pears but also potatoes and bran. All of these can intensify diarrhoea. It is important not to eat raw fruit, fatty meals and also don’t drink fruit juices until the peristaltic movement is fully restored. This means not burdening the digestive system with food until the diarrhoea is absolutely finished. Eat sparingly, eating just enough to satisfy your hunger.

Beans, cabbage and brussel sprouts are basically healthy vegetables but when suffering from diarrhoea do not eat them at all. This also applies to dairy products which can harm the organism suffering from diarrhoea, regardless of whether the difficulty is due to lactose intolerance or a bacterial or viral infection. If you have an unpleasant reaction after drinking milk e.g. gasses, stomach ache or diarrhoea, meals containing lactose have to be avoided. Usually, these are all dairy products. There are exceptions – plain yogurt, some ripening cheeses, e.g. cottage cheese. Bowel problems can also be caused by ice cream. Moreover, alcohol and caffeine should be avoided for approximately 48 hours, until symptoms have dissipated. They work as dehydrating agents (diuretics) because they encourage the kidneys to produce more urine.

  • Eat easily digestible foods
Symptoms of bowel problems – diarrhoea, constipation After the diarrhoea has subsided, gradually introduce non-irritating foods. The most suitable examples are bananas, rice, biscuits, boiled chicken, mashed potatoes and apple juice. When the appetite is restored, however, no sooner than 24 hours after the diarrhoea has ceased, consume only bananas, cooked rice, apples and white toast. Bananas replenish potassium which is required to regulate the balance of bodily fluids. White toast and cooked rice replenish the stores of saccharides. Most importantly, avoid taking fibre because it encourages accelerated peristaltic movement which unnecessarily irritates the bowels. According to natural healers consuming apples constitutes a bowel cleanse. The above noted foods can be eaten gradually, in small portions, and in approximately 48 hours cooked potatoes and steamed vegetables can be added.

Later, when all symptoms have gradually disappeared, you can try to eat normal food again. Milk and dairy products as well as eggs and meat should be the last ones to be introduced into your menu.

  • Popular home remedies
One of the most popular is pectin, and capsules containing probiotic bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Further, powdered St John’s bread (carob – Ceratonia siliqua), wheat porridge (frumenty) or bananas are also popular. Do not try to remove the unpleasant symptoms of diarrhoea immediately or stop the excessive peristaltic movement. By doing so the life of the harmful substances or parasites in the bowels could be extended.

The Colonix Program and a bowel cleanse

This is an ideal means of preventing various diseases. It is one of the most effective and safest natural solutions to diarrhoea ever. The Colonix Program components (Colonix fibre, Paranil and KleriTea) have an ideal composition. Colonix fibre consists of high quality soluble and insoluble fibre. It has a beneficial impact and maintains the health of the colon. Thanks to its other components as well (see here) a bowel cleanse is achieved:

  • the accumulated build-up, sediments and parasites are removed from the colon

  • the symptoms of constipation are moderated, or totally disappear

  • it brings relief from haemorrhoids

  • it gently supports a natural bowel movement

  • it protects the intestinal lining from the unwanted irritation caused by toxic and carcinogenic substances

  • it reduces the risk of colon and rectal cancer

  • it provides protection from various diseases (reduces the occurrence of intestinal outpouchings, bowel inflammation, etc.)

Now I'm actually in need of another Colonix cleanse!

I've been struggling with bowel issues my whole life to one degree or another. But last year when I was on a month long trip to Asia, I contracted a stomach virus or bacteria and the problems got worse, even after the acute phase had passed. I began having episodes of painful unbearable constipation and diarrhea which resulted in an array of symptoms including weightloss, intense brain fog, physical weakness, dizziness and funky looking stools. Eventually I decided to cut the trip short and return home, almost fainting once at the airport. When I got home, while weak and tired, I immediately began searching the web for solutions to my ailments and stumbled upon the Colonix Colon Cleanse program. Stuff began coming out of me and for the first time in a month I had regular bowel movements. And the best part is that it wasn't painful or "violent" like with some OTC laxatives, but instead smooth and gentle. I went through two Colonix programs back-to-back and saved the third for later. Colonix did help alleviate some of my ailments, especially the alternating constipation and diarrhea, giving me back regular bowel movements in some form of consistency. Which then allowed my body to heal itself and most of my symptoms disappeared within a few months. Overall my experience with Colonix was positive and I highly recommend it to anyone who has bowel problems, it's definitely worth a try
